Welcome to Ann Smith Elementary!

Ann Smith Elementary, in the Madison County School District, is a kindergarten through second grade school site. We have approximately 600+ students, with an average class size of twenty four students per room. Each classroom is staffed with a teacher and a teacher's assistant.

Ann Smith places a strong emphasis in the areas of reading and math. Our teachers and assistants have all been trained in “best practices of reading.” Our focus is a “balanced literacy” approach, in which guided reading is a key component. Guided reading focuses on reading as a process and uses gradually leveled books to build a bridge from whole-group lessons and shared reading toward independent reading. Students read from a variety of non-fiction and fiction texts, through which science and social studies are taught as well.

Our math curriculum, which challenges teachers and students to go beyond arithmetic – to explore more of the mathematics spectrum through a math program by investigating data gathering and analysis, probability, geometry, patterns, and algebra.

Research shows that when facts and procedures are taught in isolation from the related conceptual understandings, few children learn how to apply them correctly. Our school is the first in the state implementing this math program. Once again, we are leaders in our field!   Mathematics is integrated into other subject areas and becomes part of the ongoing classroom routines, outdoor play, and the spare transitional moments that occur every day.

In addition to the regular curriculum, students take part in Music, Physical Education, Computers and Library weekly. We also have a strong character education program, which is incorporated into daily activities. We have a very successful school and are very proud of our teachers and students. We hope that you have a chance to be a part of our Ann E. Smith family – whether as a student, parent or a volunteer – it is a great place to be!
